UK Champion 2015.
1. Since when have you been playing X-Wing?
I started getting into X-Wing in May-June 2014 with Alex Birt. Just a few months before Wave 4 was released. We were looking to start playing Battlefleet Gothic again, but found this instead!
2. What is or was your favorite 100 point squadron?
It will probably always be the Double Aggressor squad (Push the Limit, Advanced Sensors, HLC and Mangler Cannons, Autothrusters). That squad has everything that I enjoy about the game.
3. Do you have a favorite ship or pilot that you try an include in your squads? (Due to the ability, model, …)
My favourite ship is the HWK-290. It’s such a stupid-looking, awkward little ship and, honestly, is quite terrible. Can’t help but love it! Was a big fan of the Jedi Knight games as a teenager, so that’s probably where it comes from.
4. How do you build/find squads? Do you have preferred tactics? Offensive/defensive? Do you prefer durable ships or arc-dodgers?
I’m sitting on trains for two hours every single day travelling to and from work, so that’s when I’m listening to podcasts and messing around with the squadbuilder apps. When I’m building competitive squads, I’ll start with a simple core idea (eg. two IG-88s, or Manaroo with Mindlink, etc) and then experiment with different builds until I find something that works for me. My preference mainly for two- and three-ship builds capable of aggressive, rapid engagements.
5. Is there a ship that you would like an upgrade for? Either a title or new pilots.
I would like to see a new HWK-290 title as an alternative to the Moldy Crow; something that makes it a better support ship, especially for the Rebels.
6. What was your greatest achievement?
Winning the UK Nationals in 2015! Had played almost exactly for one year. It’s been a fantastic pleasure to represent the UK community and contribute back to it as much as possible.
7. Whats your opinion on the current development of X-Wing?
We’re starting to see several new and interesting mechanics getting layered over the ruleset with each new Wave, which is exciting, but I don’t think it can be sustainable for much longer because some interactions are getting so complex. I think a „2.0“ rewrite is almost inevitable in 2-3 years. X-Wing had a very simple ruleset when it was first released, and I like that they’re trying hard to evolve it, but cracks are starting to show. We’re very fortunate though that the developers for the game in the last couple of years (Alex Davy, Frank Brooks and others) have had such a drive and passion for it; it’s very reassuring as a player and the game still has so much promise.
8. Whats your view of the community?
X-Wing has one of the best player communities in gaming, absolutely. Generally, the „Fly Casual“ attitude that was around when I joined the game is still being promoted today, which is great. I’ve made so many new and wonderful friends all over the world from taking part in the competitive tournament scene – it’s really great.
9. Where do you collect/exchange information about X-Wing?
Facebook (mostly just the 5000-member strong UK group) and podcasts, mostly. There are a few player-written blogs that I follow too. We chat very regularly, all day long, within the 186th Squadron as well. Haven’t really got time to follow any forums or reddit too closely though.
10. Are there any pilots or crew members you are missing from books, TV-shows, movies, comics, games?
Never really got into the Extended Universe stuff that much. But I think FFG have done a brilliant job of combining the best bits of different source materials without overwhelming the game. There’s a lot to look forward to, now that Disney own the license!
Thank you very much Jesper for answering our questions. Maybe we can meet you at the Open Series Tournament in Germany or at a Unicorn Tournament in the nice region of Franconia.
